Designed, engineered and hand-built in Italy by bespoke car manufacturer Manifattura Automobili Torino, the new SCG003S has been unveiled today at the 87th Geneva International Motor Show.
In one way or another, design and engineering can never be fully separated. But never has this been more the case than with the SCG003S. Beauty and function are one, closely united in their goal to create an extreme and enduring performance.
The overall LMP-inspired shape is defined by aerodynamic volumes that are shrink-wrapped around the essentials of the car: the cabin, the engine and the four wheels. This can be clearly seen in the central volume that starts as a penetrating nose which swells around the cabin and then returns to enclose the engine in one fluent aerodynamic movement to the end of the car. This approach creates a very permeable design that reduces air resistance to a minimum. The creases on the fenders are another example of this ‘performance design’: they convey muscularity in the sideview but don’t interfere with frontal air resistance.
The final result is a design that creates the rare combination of both exterior and interior design of the sometimes brutal honesty and efficiency we know from race cars with the attention to coherence, proportion and care for detail that is normally reserved only for streetcars. Not by coincidence, the SCG003S feels at home both on the track and the road.
Bodywork is built entirely in carbon fiber, provided by high-class suppliers, with a care for detail that goes way beyond racing car standards.
A number of easily removable panels allow quick access to all areas. The combination of panel dimension and the easy accessible fixation points are designed for fast intervention during races but also help and reduce time for standard maintenance.
All the bodywork is positioned and supported by a skeleton of very light but stiff carbon fiber ribs. This structure allows the use of very light carbon fiber components, offers a built-in reference system very useful for checking vehicle dimension and faster repair of minor body damage.
One of the key distinctive features of the SCG003S is her aerodynamic sophistication, which has made it possible to achieve some top notch performances, unmatched by any other racing car in this category, such as an aero efficiency around three, a reduced front area and downforce over 1.000 Kg, resulting into a maximum achievable lateral acceleration in excess of 2g on regular tires, and beyond 2.5g on racing tires.
Streamlined cockpit: The organic shape of the cockpit has been designed in order to minimize its aerodynamic footprint on the wake. Its lines carefully follow natural airflow streamlines, preventing early boundary layer separation, and therefore minimizing the loss of energy in the rear turbulent zone.
Virtual Side Ducting: The peculiar shape of the fenders, as well as the way they are connected to the body, generates a unique virtual semi-permeable air channel on each side of the car body, a feature that is unique to the SCG003S. The airflow leaves the front fender, laps the side panel and remains undisrupted all the way through the air intake on the rear fender, as if it were enclosed in a material duct. Not only the airflow is perfectly laminar, with extremely reduced energy drops along the way, but it is also further fed by additional air coming from underneath the car body.
This original solution of channeling the airflow results in less weight, reduced front area, and increased air-feeding capacity towards the hungry flow eaters in the back: engine air intake, heat rejection through intercoolers, engine and gearbox oil radiators, and general engine bay cooling.
V-Cooler scheme: Another unique result of the extensive aerodynamic developments carried out on the SGC003C has been converting the usual upper/lower wing surface flow split into a side deviation. By creating a sort of virtual bow in front of the car, the air flow smoothly and swiftly embraces the two sides of the car body, rather than being accelerated on the top of the car profile generating undesired aero lift. The cooler positioning in the front follows this concept of maximizing heat rejection.
Rear wing: The unusual and eye-catching shape of the two swan neck pillars supporting the wing adopted on the SCG003C has been abandoned in favor of a cleaner design on the SCG003S. Yet, no compromise has been made on performance, given that the SGC003S’ rear wing can achieve all-time high aerodynamic efficiency values in excess of 20.
The bottom, one of the most crucial parts in the aerodynamic optimization of a racing car, has been the subject of intensive study. The front Venturi profile has been designed in order to obtain an underneath pressure distribution that minimizes pitch sensitivity. NACA air inlets have been positioned behind the mid-line, with the purpose of extracting the highest possible flow, diverting it from the route that would increase tire-generated drag. The extractor shape has also been optimized to keep the main flow separated from the “dirty” turbulent area close to the wheels.
The all-carbon fiber structure – supplied by ARS Tech Srl – has been designed to achieve maximum rigidity and flexibility in packaging, ease of maintenance and safety. The rear carbon fiber frame holds the suspension pick-up points and can be easily exchanged to allow the use of different engines on the same platform.
The monocoque is extremely light, with a total weight of just 105 Kg, and no need for additional tubular frames. It boasts a torsional stiffness of 36.000 Nm/deg. The door hinges, directly derived from the SCG003C, are inspired by LMP1 designs and feature safety hinges for emergency removal of the door.
From a crashworthiness standpoint, the SCG003S complies with the strictest standard of FIA rules.
Both front and rear suspension architecture is double wishbone pushrod type, as suitable to a racing thoroughbred. All components are machined from aluminum super-alloys: uprights are in Avional and suspension mounts are made of Aluminum 7-series alloy, to guarantee the best weight to stiffness ratio.
Teflon-lined uniball and hi-performance elastic bushing ensure maximum precision in kinematic suspension angle control, for the highest handling performance and the most direct steering wheel feeling.
Electronically adjustable shock absorbers allow for detail fine-tuning of handling behavior according to any given track profile and driver style. Shim adjustment of toe angles provides extra tuning options.
A chassis lifter is available at speeds lower than 50 Km/h, in order to facilitate access to ramps and drive over speed bumps.
SCG003S braking system features custom carbo-ceramic Brembo CCM-R discs. The main advantages of this system are: higher thermal conductivity and maximum braking power, typical of an F1-standard carbon disc, and increased durability and versatility.
Front brakes feature front Ø380 mm ventilated discs, 6 piston calipers; and rear Ø360 mm ventilated discs, 4 piston calipers. Brake casings wrap the whole unsprung mass, in order not to export turbulence from the wheels into the external flow. They are ceramic coated, a luxury normally not available in GT models, to sustain the highest temperatures.

The inspiring concept of the interior arrangement is one of ergonomics: in the confined space dictated by the strict rules of fluid dynamics, yet the driver – and, possibly, his/her passenger – must be accommodated comfortably and be in full command of all controls.
All crucial driving function controls are centralized on the steering wheel, including a driving mode dial that controls engine, clutch, gear shifting and suspensions behavior, with four different settings: Track, Sport, Comfort and Rain. Another dial is devoted to Traction Control, which can be operated when in Track Mode only. Traction Control can be switched off, and can be adjusted on four different levels from less to more intrusive.
The dash has three screens: two for the rear view mirrors and one main display for the key information. The center main display also features a split screen option, where the smartphone display can be mirrored on a portion of it, bringing entertainment and navigation information closer to the driver’s eyes. The central console right hosts most of the secondary functions, including lights, air conditioning, central door lock, hazard, etc.
All indications are painted in photo luminescent dye, a racing-type solution that does not need complex wiring behind the dash to make sure each function is properly lit. The SCG003S is equipped with a fully automatic air conditioning system.
The engine is an SCG fully suspended twin turbo, dry sump 8-cylinder V 90°, 4.4-liter unit. It delivers maximum power of 800 HP at 7000 rpm and a maximum torque of 850 Nm at 5900 rpm.
The hydraulically controlled SACHS clutch features two organic discs, in order to provide added smoothness to driving. The longitudinal gearbox is a 7-speed CIMA sequential. The gearbox is operated through electro-pneumatic paddle shifters located behind the steering wheel. The powertrain is completed by two high strength steel half-shafts, designed and crafted specifically for the SCG003C and SCG003S by the Austrian specialist Pankl Racing Systems AG.
